Calling all stylish cyclists!
Put on your most stylish cycling outfit, polish up your bike and share the Rapha Nocturne London circuit, cycling slowly round Guildhall, Cheapside and St Paul’s.
Compete for the most elegant entry, best bike and most considerate cycling style; no lycra and urban/folding/hybrid rather than road bikes. The course will include tests of considerate cycling skills - with obstacles in the form of pedestrians, i-phone zombies, red lights, road works and other cyclists.
Families, children and cargo bikes are welcome. Bring a picnic and enjoy the car free streets of the Square Mile.
It's all about more considerate road use, sharing space in the city and making better places. Considerate cycling makes cities better! Each competitor will be provided with a stylish Rapha Nocturne London number and spectators will vote for the winners via social media.
The Chartered Architects’ Company challenges the 110 Livery companies as well as commercial companies to take part in the Concours d’Elegance with prizes going to the most elegant entries and the most considerate cyclists.
Why is this important?
The Corporation of London has long had a policy of improving the quality of place within the City, making best use of scarce space and roadways. It has improved the narrow streets of the medieval plan and created mini parks in spare corners of the Square Mile. As the numbers of people using the streets increases all road users have to treat each other with due consideration. The Corporation is focusing on walking as the most important mode of getting around the City in the day time. This can potentially bring cyclists and pedestrians into conflict. To set an example of considerate cycling styles the Concours d’Elegance will show an alternative side to cycling from the road races of the rest of the evening.
The Architects’ Company realises that the spaces between buildings are a key element in the development of good city planning and is keen to support Corporation initiatives for creating a more amenable City as a key element in its offer to business as a great place to work. The London Festival of Architecture takes place during the month of June and is an important event in the promotion of London as a major global hub for creative and construction services.
